In ‘Scaffolding’, Seamus Heaney presents the speaker’s feelings about their relationship as respectful, stable, and enduring. Through the extended metaphor of building construction, he shows that strong relationships are built carefully and, once established, can endure challenges even when surface-level support is no longer visible.

Heaney uses the extended metaphor of scaffolding to express the speaker’s belief that love requires effort and a strong foundation. He begins, “Masons, when they start upon a building, / Are careful to test out the scaffolding.” The comparison between construction work and relationships suggests that the early stages of love require preparation and care. The word “careful” implies attentiveness and mutual effort, while “test” suggests the importance of checking strength before progress is made. This metaphor shows the speaker’s respect for the process of building a lasting relationship. He sees temporary challenges as part of a larger, more permanent structure, which reveals his faith in its endurance. ……

Video Breakdown preview

The video provides a step-by-step breakdown of a Level 6 answer and compares it with a Level 4 response for AQA’s Unseen Poetry Question 1:
“In Scaffolding, how does the poet present the speaker’s feelings about their relationship?”

The model answer explores how Seamus Heaney uses the extended metaphor of building construction to present a calm, respectful, and enduring view of love. The speaker reflects on the strength and stability of a relationship that has been built carefully and can stand firm even after surface support is removed.

The Level 6 response argues that Heaney presents love as a process of trust, shared effort, and emotional maturity. Through close analysis of metaphor, word choice, tone, and poetic structure, the answer shows how the poem’s measured rhythm and simple form mirror the speaker’s steady emotional connection.

The essay includes:

  • Close analysis of metaphor, tone, structure, and form

  • Word-level exploration of key language choices such as “confident” and “short and solid”

  • A conceptual understanding of love as quiet, strong, and lasting

  • Evaluative insight into the speaker’s calm trust and Heaney’s poetic intention

In contrast, the Level 4 response shows general understanding and uses some relevant evidence, but lacks depth, precision, and exploration of how poetic methods convey meaning. It remains descriptive and surface-level, with minimal analysis of structure, tone, or context.

The video highlights how top-level answers engage deeply with the poet’s techniques and intentions, offering a thoughtful and interpretive reading rather than simply summarising the poem’s content.
